LEAVE IT TO BETTMAN

When we last checked in, Beaver Bettman was trying to throw the New York Rangers out of his club, because they had built an unauthorized web site. The Rangers went to court, represented by their attorney, Eddie Haskell. Let's see how Beav is doing...

Beaver is at home talking things over with his brother Wally...

Hey Wally...

Yeah, Beav?

Wally, I don't know what to do about this junk with the Rangers and Eddie Haskell.

Gee Beav, it sure sounds like Eddie got the judge to like him a lot. How do the other teams feel about him?

Gee, I don't know, Wally. Maybe I should find out.

Yeah Beav, that's a good idea. Maybe if you get the other teams behind you, you can show the judge you're not just being a sorehead about the whole thing.

Beaver Bettman then sends out his emissary, Lumpy Rutherford, to talk with the other owners. It's time to go back to court, and he's getting ready for the big day.

Hey Wally, I got Lumpy to talk to all the owners.

What happened?

Lumpy said the owners are all together. They all feel the same way about the Rangers and Eddie.

Golly Beav, that should make things easy for you. Just go in and show the judge that the whole club feels the same way, and they HAVE to decide in your favor!

Later that day, in court...

Your honor, we have someone here to represent all the owners...

Your honor! Eddie Haskell, representing the New York Rangers! He doesn't represent ALL the owners, since he doesn't represent the Rangers! By the way your honor, did you go on vacation? Because you really look tan. You look like one of those stars from the TV shows.

JUDGE: Duly noted. Do you represent all the teams, excluding the New York Rangers?

LUMPY: Not exactly, your honor...

BEAV: Lumpy, what's going on? I thought you said the owners were all united.

LUMPY: They are, Beav. I just never got a chance to explain.

Your honor, please let me explain. The New York Rangers have bought every team in the NHL.

You can't do that!

Let's ask all the owners. Oh wait a minute, I AM all the owners! I'm also making sure all the best players come to New York, so we can win the Stanley Cup, or at least get through the second round of the playoffs!

But I'm the Commissioner!

Sure, Beav, you can be the Commissioner. But since we own every team, we can pretty much do whatever we want.

Then a voice comes from the back of the courtroom...

Your honor, may I be heard!

BEAV: Dad!

WARD: Now Beaver, you can't just throw people out of your club when they do things you don't like. If Eddie and his friends want to build a nicer web site, they should be able to. And Eddie...

Yes? And how is your lively bride?

WARD: Eddie, you have to give back the other teams. Being selfish like that is no way to play fair. All the owners have to get their teams back.

Even "Stinky" Ballard?

WARD: Even "Stinky".

So everyone leaves the courtroom, the Rangers have their nice web site, the owners all have their teams back, and Ward takes the Beav home, where his mom is making pot roast for dinner.
