Home Cooking: Hawks 4, Duck 2

Man, that was a weird game.  No slow start for the Hawks tonight, they looked pretty good in the first period, peppering Jonas Hiller with 17 shots.  Unfortunately, Hiller stood on his head in that period, allowing only Patrick Sharp's power play goal.  The Ducks then dominated the second period and most of the third.  The Hawks simply could not mount a rush out of their own zone against Anaheim's forecheck which took the life out of the crowd, who actually booed the Blackhawks several times.  Finally, Chicago busted out in the last 5 minutes, scoring 3 goals and putting the game away.

THE GOOD

Cristobal Huet:  This may have been Huet's best game as a Hawk.  He still gave up quite a few rebounds, but kept stopping the shots, keeping his team in the game when it seemed that the ice was tilted towards his goal.  Nice job by the Frenchman.

Kris VERSTEEG!:  Two assists for Versteeg, on the game tying and game winning goal.  On the former, he started a rush that resulted in a goal (finally) for Martin Havlat, and on the second, he picked up a rebound in front of the net and slid a sweet backhanded pass across the crease to Jonthan Toews.

Martin Havlat:  Havlat played one of his better games this year, skating a lot better tonight than he did on the road trip.  His shifts seemed to be the only ones that the Hawks generated any offensive pressure on during the 2nd period.

THE BAD

The Defensemen:  Bad night for these guys.  The Hawks lack of offense in the middle of the game was directly related to the inability of the defense to move the puck up against Anaheim's aggressive forecheck.  Instead of standing in and taking hits in order to make good passes, they seemed to flinging the puck away blindly whenever a Duck got too close.

Penalty Kill:  The Hawks gave up another power play goal, this one to Chris Pronger (on a well screened shot).  The good news is the team is taking fewer penalties, however, they're still going to need to get the penalty kill fixed.

THE UGLY

The Second and Third Periods:  The Ducks physically dominated the Hawks for 35 ugly minutes.  The Blackhawks finally broke out of it when a 4 on 4 opened up the ice for them to generate a rush and score the tying goal.  After that, they finally seemed to regain their confidence against the much bigger Ducks.

Kris Versteeg:  Not his play, but his face.  Versteeg took a nasty cross check in the face during the second period, and later caught a high stick in the face from his teammate Dustin Byfuglien.  But hey, I'm sure puck bunnies love a man with scars.

I had work to do early in the 3rd, when the Hawks just could not get the damn puck out of their own zone. When I woke up this morning and saw they had won, I couldn't believe it.

That penalty kill is their achilles heel right now. I can't remember if the Pronger goal was on the power play or not but the Selanne goal was awful. Someone should tell the Hawks unless you're Kris Versteeg, it's impossible to score from behind the net.

The Selanne goal was ridiculous. You could see on the replay all 4 Hawks are grouped around the net staring at Niedermeyer and not single one bothered to pick up Selanne.

No mistake, Huet stole this game for the Hawks. Nice to see he has it in him.

The Pronger goal actually came right off the Power Play. It was still a weird play though - It was Huet's soft goal of the night for sure.

Lousy game, great result. The good news from this one was what CT said: Huet showed he can be the goaltender the Hawks can count on! Will make Tallon's job to unload 'Bulin easier if the Frenchman can keep stepping up!

Chicago definitely stole 2 points from the Ducks. Huet can be the real deal. His problem is with his consistency. If he gets that smoothed out he can be a top 10 goalie in this league
