WHY-OH-WHY-OH: Blackhawks 3, Blue Jackets 1
Did the Columbus Blue Jackets leave Ohio?
The Chicago Blackhawks sent over 21,000 fans home with a win, their fourth in a row. The Blue Jackets took an early lead, with Fredrik Modin scoring on a shot that Cam Barker didn't know how to defend, and Cristobal Huet never saw. That was it for them. Patrick Sharp scored with .4 seconds left in the second period to tie the game, then Martin Havlat and Duncan Keith ran a picture-perfect give and go for the eventual winning goal in the third. Brent Seabrook scored an empty-netter off Michael Peca's glove. Let's get to it...
THE GOOD:
The telecast. Damn, it's great to have Hawks' home games on TV. Especially when the production staff has clearly been influenced by the late Arne Harris. Puck bunnies everywhere. Kudos to the well-endowed brunette in the "shoot the puck" game. Exceptional.
Faceoffs. The Hawks won 60% of their faceoffs tonight. Control the puck and you will generally win the game.
Cristobal Huet. His save on Rick Nash's breakaway was every bit as highlight-worthy as Jonathan Toews' goal was last week. The first shot of the game got past him, and that was it. Great work on controlling rebounds. In fact, great goaltending on both ends of the ice tonight.
Team discipline. The Hawks only played 2 minutes short handed the entire night.
THE BAD:
They still need to start games strong. They were basically invisible the first 30 minutes of the game. Lots of bad turnovers, and their passing lacked precision. This business of spotting the opponent a goal or two every night is not a good strategy.
Joel Quenneville's "prevent defense". The Hawks get a lead in the third period, and Coach Q lets up on the throttle. As Ed Olczyk says, the best defense is keeping the puck 200 feet from your goalie.
THE UGLY:
Brent Sopel's neckbeard. He went from looking like My Other Brother Darrell to looking like Dave Grohl. Not an upgrade. Now, all will be forgiven if the Hawks get inspired by the Ottawa Senators' team mustache growing, and all start sporting neckbeards. That would be awesome.
Next up is Tuesday night, when the Hawks trek out to Edmonton to face the red-hot Oilers. Also coming up is our next PUCKCAST, with our guests from The Fifth Feather.

I was at the game. My first one ever. The young lady and I were amazed. The fans really jump to their feet like no other when there is a goal.
This team is fun to watch.
