WATCHING SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO: Super Skills Competition

As part of the All-Star festivities in Montreal this weekend, the NHL held their annual Super Skills Competion and Young Stars Game.

The Young Stars game was won handily by the rookies 9-5,l ed by Blake Wheeler of the Bruins. Wheeler had a hat trick, while the Hawks' Kris VERSTEEG's finger kept him out of action. The Hawks' Dave Bolland had a goal for the sophomores, who didn't send out the Hawks' Patrick Kane or Jonathan Toews.

The Super Skills competion included the fastest skater competition, which was won by Andrew Cogliano of Edmonton, making it around the rink in 14.31 seconds. Brian Campbell of the Hawks came in fifth out of six with a speed of 14.90 seconds.

Next came the Breakaway Challenge, which is the NHL's version of the Slam-Dunk competition. Alexander Ovechkin of Washington won the voting, which was done by fans via texting, with his last shot coming after Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins helped him put on a funny had and sunglasses. Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks finished fifth out of six. Get a haircut, kid. You look like Gene Wilder.

Next, after the aforementioned Young Stats game, came the shooting accuracy. Malkin won with 3 hit targets in 4 shots, after tying Dany Heatley of Ottowa with 4 out of 4 in the first round. Toews' finished with a respectable 4 hits targets in 8 shots in the first round.

Next came the hardest shot, the only competition of the night that had no representation from the Blackhawks. Nashville's Shea Weber looked unbeatable with a shot clocked at 103.4 MPH, until the Bruins' mutant Zdeno Chara ratcheted one up to 105.4, breaking Al Iafrate's record.

Finally came the Elimination Shootout. All three Blackhawks showed why the Hawks have such a dismal record in shootouts, all being eliminated in the first round. It took seven rounds for Phoenix's Shane Doan to best Boston's Marc Savard.

It looked like a lot of fun to attend, but some of the TV stuff dragged, and a few goals were missed due to replays. Still, it's always nice to see a class act like Pat LaFontainne show up for an interview.

Even though the Hawks more or less went meekly, it's still nice to see the Indian Head being represented on more than one sweater at a time.
