HAWKS STINK ON ICE: Islanders 4, Blackhawks 2

OK, you've got the team with the worst record in the NHL. They decided to put Peter Mannino in the pipes for his first NHL start. They just flew in from Boston, after getting beaten by the Bruins yesterday.

What could go wrong?

This.

The New York Islanders, front-runners in the John Tavares Derby, manage to bitch-slap the Chicago Blackhawks all over the ice at the United Center, winning 4-2. Let's get to it:

THE GOOD:

Brent Seabrook. As Pat Foley said, there were some "juicy jolts" today, and Seabrook was an absolute hitting machine.

The return of Nikolai Khabibulin. Sure, the Hawks lost, but getting Khabi back is going to be big down the homestretch.

THE BAD:

Stupid-assed penalties. Patrick Kane takes one for closing his hand on the puck, Khabibulin takes one for playing the puck outside the trapezoid, Matt Walker takes one for shooting the puck over the glass. They got away with a too-many-men. Just dumb hockey.

Bad shots in the offensive zone. Sure, Mannino stopped 40 out of 42 shots, but a guy in his first NHL start, you need to crash the net and try to get him rattled. He made great saves, to be sure, but the Hawks have been successful lately by putting asses in the goalie's face.

THE UGLY:

Special teams. The Hawks' power play managed to get a goal in 6 chances, including a 6-on-3, after the Hawks pulled Khabibulin that went for naught. The kill unit, thanks to those moronic penalties, were on the ice for over 9 minutes, and gave up 3 goals. The special teams were as vile as the fries Long Islanders get at Jones Beach.

So the Hawks get shut down by a guy starting his first NHL game. Next, they face the red-hot New Jersey Devils, with Martin Brodeur attempting to set the all-time wins record.

Good luck with that.

Brian Campbell is, i think, a -8 in his last four games. He has been atrocious. He's also missed three open nets in the past three games.

It's come down to Matt Walker and Niklas Hjalmarrson? I didn't mind letting Wisniewski go. However, I didn't think that the smallest defender in the NHL would be going full time...and maybe we can get over all the Matt Walker love, too?

Pelletier charges hard to the net and gives 100%. I like the SOB. Patrick Kane can't buy anything lately.

It's a sad state of affairs, really.
