Better: Hawks 4, Oilers 5 (SO)
Don't let the score fool you. The Blackhawks looked a lot better tonight than they have in quite a while. Had this shootout loss come earlier in the season when things were going better, I'd have written it off to bad luck. But since it came during the Hawks worst stretch of the year, well, all the mistakes are a bit more magnified. It seemed like Chicago outworked and outplayed the Oilers for most of the game. The Blackhawks outshot Edmonton 43-31 and beat them in the faceoff circle 33-23. The shots they generated were of good quality and they constantly had guys driving the net to get in front of Dwayne Roloson. But every time the Hawks scored, it seemed like something stupid happened and the Oilers got an easy goal back.
THE GOOD
Marty Havlat: Havlat played another awesome game tonight, getting a goal and an assist. His tying goal was a thing of beauty, as he corralled a rebound in the slot, got the defenseman down, got Roloson down and let go the shot as he was knocked to the ice.
Brian Campbell: Campbell played much better tonight. Maybe it was the Oilers lack of a physical game, but Campbell was flying through the neutral zone like his old self and even managed a +2.
Cam Barker: Barker played a good all around game, making some key plays to hold the puck in, using his size to push Oilers around and scoring a goal.
THE BAD
Breakaways: The Hawks kept letting Oilers get behind them for breakaways, and it cost them 2 goals tonight. Guh.
Dwayne Roloson: Roloson was good for the Oilers which was bad for the Hawks. Roloson was peppered with shots and the Hawks had guys in front of the net all night. He also stopped Jonathan Toews on a penalty shot that would have won the game in regulation.
THE UGLY
Ben Eager's blindside hit that knocked out Liam Reddox was only slightly uglier than Ethan Moreau's goal. Moreau floated a shot into the crease that was knocked 8 feet in the air by Dave Bolland before falling in behind a flailing Khabibulin and into the net. Goddamn what a frustrating game.
In honor of the Oilers, enjoy some Dave Semenko.

What in the Ken Stills was Ben Eager doing?

I am not sure what is going on with this team but it is very ugly. Are the injuries with Sharp and Khabibulin catching up to this team? Khabibulin was kicking ass all year until his injury. I will give him a few more games to figure out if the first few months were a fluke or not.
Do you think also it is possible the trade of Wisnewski has something to do with this recent skid?

Trading Wiz meant nothing, at least from the standpoint of 3rd pair defensive depth.
Sure, he was popular in the clubhouse, but these guys know they're a winning team now, and guys are going to get moved.
