Friday Night Fights: Playoff Roundup

Before we get to the fight, a quick trip around the NHL.  The first round is in full swing, so let's take a look at the series and how they're playing(or have played) out:

4. Chicago vs. 5. Calgary (series tied 2-2):  A huge home game for the Blackhawks on Saturday night.  A win and they take back control of the series, a loss brings them face to face with elimination.  I still think the Hawks have an edge in overall talent, but Khabibulin needs to play like he did in games 1 and 2, not 3 and 4.

2. Detroit vs. 7. Columbus (Detroit wins 4-0) and 1. Boston 8. Montreal (Boston wins 4-0):  These series were over before I even got a chance to pay attention to them.

2. Washington vs. 7. NY Rangers (New York leads 3-2): The Rangers shocked the Caps by taking the first two games at DC.  With a win tonight, the Caps pull the series to 3-2, but have yet to show they can win a close game.  I'm pulling for Washington in this one, if only because I love watching Ovechkin, he's just that damn good.  In fact, if you didn't catch his 2nd period goal tonight, go here and watch it.

3. New Jersey vs. 6. Carolina (New Jersey leads 3-2):  This was Chris Block's upset special, but it looks like New Jersey might hang on for the win.  Unfortunately, few of the games in this series have been on VERSUS, which instead gives us "look ins" on the games during their post game shows.  And they always manage to just miss something good, including cutting back away right before Carolina scored a goal with less than a second left to win Tuesday's game.

4. Pittsburgh vs. 5. Philadelphia (Pittsburgh leads 3-2):  I thought Pittsburgh would run away with this one, but the Flyers have scrapped their way back into it.  I still don't think they can hang with the Penguins though.

3. Vancouver vs. 6. St. Louis (Vancouver wins 4-0):  The Blues seemingly shot their wad just to get into the playoffs, and had nothing left in the tank.  Even when they did manage some life, Roberto Luongo quickly exstinguished it.  He was excellent in this series, which could be big for the Hawks because...

1. San Jose vs. 8. Anaheim (Anaheim leads 3-1):  The Ducks are on the verge of taking the President's Trophy winning Sharks out of the playoffs in the battle of Barry Rozner's two favorite hockey executives.  A certain writer on this website picked the Ducks to win this series in our Playoff Preview Puckcast, and a Ducks win combined with a Hawks win would give Chicago home ice advantage in a showdown with the Vancouver Hair Pullers in the second round.

And now, a 38 second summation of the Bruins/Canadiens first round series:
