Over and Out: Hawks 1, Red Wings 2 (OT) Detroit wins series 4-1
Shit, does this mean I've got to start watching the Cubs again?
Wow. Despite the outcome, this was a tremendous game. I feel sorry for those dopes who say "I don't like hockey because there's not enough scoring". If you can't appreciate a goaltending exhibition like the one put on tonight, then that's your problem. I will say that I have never thought much of Chris Osgood, but tonight, he was brilliant. He turned away point blank chances left and right, and he deserved the win. As for Cristobal Huet, he put on a show as well, dragging his team kicking and screaming into overtime where they finally succumbed. If anything good came out of this game, I guess the dumbasses who completely wrote Huet off after Game 4 won't have to spend all summer breathing into a paper bag.
THE GOOD
The Goaltenders: Both of them. The netminders put on a clinic tonight, with both making great stops. I think my favorite was Huet's desperation skate save to deny Johan Franzen on a wide open net with twenty seconds left in regulation.
Colin Fraser: Fraser played like a man on a mission tonight. He was hitting everything, winning faceoffs and getting his stick on some point blank chances. Osgood basically stole two goals from him.
Keith and Seabrook: These guys were excellent tonight. They kept the traffic in front of Huet to a minimum allowing the Hawks to control any rebounds.
THE BAD
Ben Eager: Eager got himself a misconduct penalty for shooting his mouth off to the referees, and was benched late in the game by Joel Quenneville. Eager needs to remember that while he can be a useful part of this team, he's also very replaceable. Get your head out of your ass, son.
THE UGLY
The season's over. That's the only ugly I find here. This game was a 180 turn from Game 4, the Hawks simply fired all their bullets at the Wings tonight, and Detroit had one more in the chamber. No shame in losing this one, none at all.

Mea culpa on Huet. The Fabulous Frenchman was just that, fabulous. Shame the game ended because of the Joe Louis end boards, Huet deserved better.

Let's not just get too much wood over Huet. He was great last night, but he makes a ton of money and is going to be 34 at the start of next season.
Fork - Is that a positive Beach comment?

Well, nobody could ever mistake me for the President of the Ben Eager Fan Club, so you can take it for what it's worth.

Age with goalies doesn't seem to matter much since Bulin and Osgood are both 36 and played very well in the playoffs.
With Huet, it seems as if he gets lazy on some nights and maybe that's what rubbed me the wrong way on him this season. If he brings that level of intensity as he did in Gm 5, then the Hawks don't have to worry too much between the pipes.
