This Getting Pathetic: Hawks 7, Flames 1

Sucks to be you, Calgary.  Seriously, the Hawks have to be so deep in the Flames collective heads it's silly.  Chicago used the Flames as punching bags all last season, then dumped them in the first round of the playoffs.  So Calgary comes out in their first regular season meeting this year, gets up by 5 goals and then blows the lead and loses in overtime.  But THIS time, they'd be ready.  Calgary would come out and play with DA FIRE and DA PASSION and take it to those Chicago punks.

Or maybe they're just saving it up for the next meeting.

THE GOOD

2nd Period:  The Hawks outscored Calgary 5-1 in the second period, effectively putting the game away.  Calgary basically rolled over and let the Hawks rub their belly for the last 20 minutes.

Patrick Kane:  How do you celebrate you 21st birthday?  How about with a goal and an assist?  And the sick part is, Kane drew iron with 3 other shots.  He could have easily had a hat trick.

The Muckers and Grinders:  Good night for these guys.  Goals from Ladd, Byfuglien, Eager and Brouwer and a nice game from Bickell.  Hell, the entire team played well, but it's nice to see some of the more unsung guys dent the twine.

VERSTEEG!:  Two goals?  Always good.

Special Teams:  Really, I don't want to call everything good, but the Hawks killed 4 of 5 penalties and scored on 3 of 5 power plays, including a 5 on 3(finally).  Two of the PP goals came in the last 3 minutes of the 2nd period, in a sequence that essentially broke the Flames' backs.

THE BAD

Miikka Kiprusoff:  The score wasn't all Kiprusoff's fault, but he was pulled after the 2nd intermission and he has now given up 12 goals to the Hawks in 2 games this year.

Fights:  Colin Fraser's been fighting a lot lately, and while I admire his willingness to step up, he's really a terrible fighter.  His basic strategy is to get hold of his opponent and hold on for dear life, hopefully dragging the guy down to the ice before he lands too many punches.

THE UGLY

This would have to be Duncan Keith's takedown and dry-humping of Jerome Iginla on a breakaway during the first period.  The Hawks caught a break, as the ref assessed Keith a penalty but didn't award a penalty shot, which the situation seemed to call for.  This could be seen as turning point in the game, as I trust the Hawks penalty killers a lot more than Huet in a one-on-one situation.  However, I'm not going to call it a turning point, since the Hawks scored 6 more goals after that.  They were never going to lose this one.

Up Next:  Good start to the road trip, the Hawks go to Edmonton on for a game Saturday night.

The turning point: when Ham Sandwich bashed Bourque and Dawes took a dumb penalty.

Of course, Dunc humping JaRome didn't hurt either. Except for JaRome.

Screw next season. Screw the cap.

    These Hawks rock. Now.
