LOTS OF JACKETS, NO BELT: Blue Jackets 8, Blackhawks 3
There was much ado about Brent Seabrook buying a Championship belt, and how after each win a different Blackhawk would be awarded the belt. After the Hawks' 2-0 shutout, Antti Niemi was the first recipient of the belt.After tonight's disaster in Columbus, where the Hawks fell to the Blue Jackets 8-3, I hope Seabrook kept the receipt. Mike Commodore started the scoring 32 seconds in, and the shit just rolled downhill.

THE GOOD:
With Calgary's loss to the Islanders, the Hawks are officially in the playoffs. It was ugly as hell, but fuck it - in is in.
There's lots of Tim Horton's in Columbus. We need a few here.
THE BAD:
The Hawks' lack of commitment. Jakub Voracek completely beat Niklas Hjalmarsson on a breakaway, Hjammer pulled him down, and it resulted in a penalty shot that Voracek converted. Every time the Jackets put the puck or any bodies near the net, the Hawks' defensemen did their best Billy Charlesbois imitations, just kind of floating around. This is not worthy of a playoff-bound team.
The lack of physical play. The Hawks were outhit 32-16 , and their big bodies, Dustin Byfuglien and Ben Eager, were completely nonexistent. Adam Burish went and got his face pummeled. But the team followed up their best effort in weeks with a game where everyone suffered from a busted give-a-damn. If I didn't know better, I'd say they all took Vancouver limos to the game.
THE UGLY:
Cristobal Huet. The man's confidence is shot. He got pulled in the second, and got put back in for the third. Giving up 7 goals, and by the end of the night the BJs could have shot a beach ball past him. At this point, it's not even a matter of bashing or sticking up for him. You just shake your head, hope he survives the rest of the season, and gets a change of scenery this summer.
Next up is a Sunday home game against these same red-hot Blue Jackets. Let's hope the Hawks come to play for that one.

Apparently the only thing I missed was Huet wetting himself and the Hawks' playoff chances being placed squarely on Niemi's shoulders.
This team has been way too inconsistent this close to the playoffs. And I know, they are missing two top defensemen.

Actually, they were missing three starting d-men last night.

This game really wasn't that big a deal...Q decided to see if Huet had anything going, which he clearly didn't.
It's a wakeup call for the rest of the guys and a reminder that they really aren't playing that well as a group.
Huet will be probably history next year. Maybe sooner. It's The Martin Gerber Story, Part Deux. Nice guy who can't handle the pressure of a big contract and a market that chews up goalies.
Wirtz can afford to eat the contract. So whether Huey goes to the minors or back to Europe,or retires to open a fondue restaurant in CT's neighborhood, the Hawks will probably find a way to get Cristo's 5.625MM off the books in time for next season.
