Friday Night Fights: History Will Be Made

What if...Boston had remembered their series was best of 7 and not best of 5?

Tonight, the Philadelphia Flyers joined the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1975 New York Islanders as the only teams in NHL history who have won a playoff series after losing the first 3 games.  Even more amazing is that the Flyers managed to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals despite using 43 different goalies during the season, including Ray Emery, former Blackhawk draft pick Michael Leighton, Ron Hextall and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

So, as long as history is the them for tonight, let's go back in time to watch the 1974 Flyers engage in a glorious brawl with the Atlanta (now Calgary) Flames.

Skip ahead to the 4:45 mark for the real fireworks.

April 12, 1974 -- In Game Three, in a penalty-filled contest, Don Saleski snapped a 31-game goal-less slump 2:51 into the first period and Bobby Clarke's PPG five minutes into the game gave the Flyers an early 2-0 lead en route to a 4-1 win in the Omni. Midway in the second period, with the score 2-1, Curt Bennett of Atlanta jumped Clarke from behind and was ejected. Bill Flett, as third man in, was also tossed. Eventually, the fracas led to a bench-clearing brawl that spilled over into the Flyers' bench. Jack Stewart of Atlanta was one player on the bench and waiting for him on the ice was Dave Schultz who then popped him. Earlier, Schultz pummeled Butch Deadmarsh who suffered a bloodied nose. Ref Dave Newell then ejected Schultz. Sixteen seconds later, Rick MacLeish's controversial goal that appeared to never enter the net led goalie Dan Bouchard into a frenzy. Bouchard charged ref Newell, swung his stick at linesman Neil Armstrong and was given a 10-minute misconduct in action that delayed the game for 12 minutes; Deadmarsh was given a minor for leaving the penalty box. There were 144 PIMs issued including 90 in the major brawl which suspended play for 25 minutes.

Most people really like games. We cannot deny the happiness that it brings to us. The games like this are very memorable to everyone so, we must treasure it. Maybe, there is something in it why we remember it. But, whatever it is, the important is, it brings joyfulness within our heart.
