Friday Night Fights: My Favorite Lemieux

I think every Hawks fan my age remembers Jocelyn Lemieux.  I'm not sure why, but we do.  For those of you who aren't my age, Jocelyn was best known throughout the NHL as ueberpest Claude Lemieux's brother.  But Chicago fans knew him as a tough left winger, who spent his glory years with the Hawks on the third line with Dirk Graham and Brent Sutter.  Jocelyn never gained the fame (nor showed the skill) of his older brother Claude, but he was a solid defensive player, and could chip in the occasional goal.

I don't remember Lemieux fighing much, but one of his fights does stand out.  Mainly, because he manhandled a guy with one of the greatest mustaches in hockey history, Harold Snepsts:
Ho. Lee. Shit.

Snepsts was a stay at home defensemen and Vancouver Canucks legend who played in 1000 NHL games and once used his facial hair to suffocate a rabid moose that was terrorizing downtown Edmonton.  The most amazing part of his escapade was that Snepsts was only 11 years old at the time.

Regardless, Snepsts was at the end of his career when he decided to try and teach young Joceyln Lemieux a lesson.  Unfortunately for Harold, sometimes a mustache just isn't enough.

Things I remember about J Lemieux - he was tough as nails, faster than hell and he scored that off-angle playoff goal against the Blues in '92 (at least I think it was the Blues - just remember him hauling ass to cancel and icing and he surprised the goalie with the shot - I think that game ended up 1-0 too). Oh, and he was one suave mo-fo as well - perhaps the original Patrick Sharp...

Just goes to show ya...one, never mess with a French Canadian; two, never mess with a French Canadian with a pornstache; three, never mess with a French Canadian hockey player with a pornstache named Jocelyn.

      Especially if he's a Hawk.

    Thanks, CT.

Funny thing is I don't remember Old Joce getting into to too many brawls, but he could throw his body around something fierce.

The irony of Jocelyn Lemieux is that he always thought of himself as a skill player and hated Mike Keenan for turning him into 3rd line grinder, per se. He was pretty damn good at what he did; I find it hard to believe he would've been better served playing on a top line.
