Hockeenight Exclusive: Inside the Derek Boogard Negotiations

Weird things happen in free agency.  Bizarre, frightening things.

Take for example, the contract of one Mr. Derek Boogard.

Today, Derek became an unrestricted free agent.  Now, Boogard is a tremendous fighter.  Frightening even.  But his other skills are, uh, underdeveloped to say the least.  Boogard averaged 6 minutes of ice time for the Minnesota Wild.  He currently holds the longest active goalless streak in the NHL.  What is all this worth to a team?

If you're Glen Sather, $6.4 million over 4 years.  That's right, $1.6 million a season.  To put it in perspective, that's the salary that Andrew Ladd made last year.  No wonder the Hawks traded him to Atlanta, I mean, if Boogard's worth $1.6, Ladd should command near $4 million.

What in the hell would possess a man to give such a huge contract to such a limited player, especially in the salary cap era>  Now, we at Hockeenight, have obtained through our top secret sources (Mark Messier), actual video footage of Boogard negotiating with Glen Sather:

Unfortunately, it appears that Pierre McGuire didn't make out quite as well.
