NOT A BANNER NIGHT IN THE UNITED CENTER: Red Wings 3, Blackhawks 2

Something happened tonight that has never happened before.

The United Center had a brand spanking new Stanley Cup champs banner raised, and the Cup itself made its debut on United Center ice.

The ceremony itself was great, with members of the 1961 team bringing the banner out for the remaining members of the 2010 team to join them in carrying the banner out to drape it over the casket of Kim Johnsson raise it to the UC rafters.

Then there was the small matter of a hockey game against the Detroit Red Wings, which the Blackhawks lost by a 3-2 margin.

Let's get to it:

THE GOOD:

Brandon Pirri. He dove on the ice to block a shot, drew a penalty, skated hard all night. He was a late fill-in for the very handsome Patrick Sharp, but he made the most of his opportunity tonight.

Marian Hossa. He is playing like the elite player he is. Crisp passing, strong skating, doing everything right. When everyone talks about what the Hawks lost this summer, they neglect to mention they have an entire season of Hossa's play.

Jack Skille. I shit you not. He played with energy all night, had a couple scoring chances, drew a penalty. He knows this is his last chance of being able to carve himself out a niche in the NHL. He's playing like it.

THE BAD:

John Scott. The MURDERSAURUS fell off his skates, leading to Valtteri Filppula's second goal. He needs to pummel someone soon, before everyone forgets why we love him around here.

The Power Play. I take back every bad thing I've ever said about Brian Campbell. Not only is he a game changer on the point, but he's a damn fine looking fellow. He looks nothing like Eric Stoltz. Nothing at all.

THE UGLY:

Tomas Kopecky. He made his deal with the Devil in last year's Final. He played great then. Now he's playing like...Tomas Kopecky. Whatever "Wonder Twins"-type mojo he has with Marian Hossa, the fact is he never turns himself into a hockey player.

Valttery Filppula. Fucking guy looks like the dude from Everclear.

The Hawks have tomorrow off before heading up to Buffalo to play the Sabres. It also gives Patrick Kane a chance to score any free drinks he may have missed out on this summer.

In the meantime, for those who are fans of Dennis Hull, Tony Amonte and Patrick Sharp, enjoy 10/10/10 tomorrow.

Eh. I think they just need some time to figure this whole thing out.

The power play sucked in the 3rd. I think they only had one or two shots out of three power plays.

By the way, whatever happened to Johnsson? He has literally disappeared. Yikes.

I thought the 4th line as a whole played a very good game. The generated chances and drew 4 penalties between them. My main issues are with Kopecky on the 1st line (if he doesn't do something with that opportunity soon, Q's going to have to hold open auditions) and the use of forwards on the point on the PP. Using Hossa up there is a complete waste. Niklas Hjalmersson is getting paid big bucks now. If the Hawks think he was worth that dough, they've got to at least give him a try on the PP, right?

Scott does really suck and don't see him getting any better unless Paul Vincent can help with his skating. Bolland had maybe 2 good shifts and the rest were garbage. Pavel Daytsuk was all over Kane last night he is a really good player
