HAWKS WIN, BUT...:Blackhawks 4, Sabres 3

The Chicago Blackhawks went into Buffalo winless, clueless, and with Corey Crawford in net looking down 200 feet from Vezina Trpohy winner Ryan Miller, hopeless. Right?

The Hawks then spotted the Sabres 2 goals in the first 2:34 of the game, both with the line of Patricks Kane and Sharp, along with Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. Again, the best goalie in the NHL at the other end. Trouble, right?

Then Niklas Hjalmarsson clobbers Jason Pominville from behind, burying his shoulder between Pominville's 2 and 9, leading to a 5 minute major, game misconduct, and probably a suspension. Screwed, right?

THE GOOD:

Marian Hossa. He is the Truth. 2 gorgeous goals, both beating Miller 5-hole. He was a bouncing puck from the hat trick. 5 points in 3 games? More, please.

Crawford. He gave up the two fast goals, then settled down. Buffalo got one on a tough bounce, but other than that, Crawford shut them down, and even looked quick in the crease, pushing off the posts for a little extra jump.

The Penalty Kill. Killing Hjalmarsson's major was the game changer, they clamped down and made Crawford's life more manageable. The momentum of the game shifted in the HAwks favor, and never returned. They were beyond huge, especially that major and a too-many-men with a shade over 2 minutes left which (due to Miller getting pulled) gave the Sabres a 6-on-4. Outstanding.

The Nicks. Leddy and Boynton really stepped up, Leddy notching his first career NHL goal, and Boynton notched over 23 minutes after Hjalmarsson's ejection. The Hawks will really need these guys to continue stepping up here. Leddy is making a very strong case for staying in the NHL once Brian Campbell returns.

THE BAD:

Bill McCreary. He was supposed to retire after last season, but he came back so the NHL wouldn't lose too many veteran refs at once. Just because you've done a job for a long time doesn't mean you're good at it. He completely biffed a Sabres' goal in the first - sure, it helped the Hawks, but it's still shit refereeing.

Centers not named Jonathan Toews. 25% (7-21) on faceoffs, no points, and Jake Dowell got his ass kicked. They've got to get it going.

THE UGLY:

Hjalmarsson's hit on Pominville. 5 minutes, a game misconduct, and probably a suspension. Just what the Hawks needed. So hello, Jordan Hendry. Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook will have to skate 45 minutes a game until Hjalmarsson returns. There's no doubt there wasn't any malicious intent, but that's why there's murder and manslaughter. Losing him makes this a costly win.

The Hawks return home to face Barry Trotz and the Nashville Predators, much to CT's delight. And we've got a new PUCKCAST tomorrow night.

Skille's gotta get a goal soon, right? Guys been busting his ass. Stalberg is a tard. Other than that I was very pleased with the effort tonight.

Well, here's a beef: Dave Bolland. Discuss.

Stalberg's been noticeable in a good way. He may not finish his chances, but he's been solid so far. That's more than I can say for "number 1 winger" Kopecky.

There's been a couple times where Stalberg pulled up on a loose puck to avoid contact. That won't fly in this league.
