WHERE ARE THE HEROES? Kane and Toews Missing during Hawks Slump
Anyone seen Kane and Toews lately? The Hawks' two big-ticket forwards have been missing while the Blackhawks have continuously been squandering points in the standing that sould be easily attainable. While on the surface, their numbers don't look particularly bad - Kane has 12 points in 14 games, and Toews has 10 in 15 - the fact that these two combined have as many goals as Marian Hossa has in 11 games is unacceptable from two players who made the move into the upper echelons of NHL forwards last season.
Kane has completely abandoned the backchecking that made him into an NHL first-team all star last season, and is hanging near the blueline looking for breakouts. The rinks are 200 feet long in this league, son. Kane is also -7.
As for Toews, remember in his rookie season when he called out the Hawks for not hating losing enough? Yeah, that was awesome. Now you're a Stanley Cup winning Captain. You're supposed to set the standard. Get angry. Rip someone. Hell, have John Scott deal out some wedgies - fucking guy has to be good for something, right? The team is not executing - and that isn't the coaches' fault, that's the fault of the guys wearing the Indian head. Time to do some of that Captain shit, man.
There seems to be a lethargy about both their games. Their shots lack the zip and rise they usually have. Instead of making water bottles jump, shots are harmlessly floating over the crossbar.
Last night's recap cited that the Hawks haven't shown a hatred of losing. That hatred needs to manifest itself from the second the puck is dropped, not when the Hawks are down a goal or two entering the third period.
These two guys are the highest paid forwards on the Chicago Blackhawks, and will be for a long time. It's time for them to start playing the type of hockey that earned them those contracts.
It's time for them to start playing winning hockey. At this point, neither player has a game winning goal. Niether player has a multi-goal game. Toews is winning faceoffs, and Kane will make the occasional pretty play, but for over $6 million a year, that isn't enough. Not by a damn sight.
The quarter pole on this season is fast approaching. It's time for the Hawks to start seeing these horses run.
