Friday Night Fights: Mike Keane
Mike Keane is not a big dude. Topping out at 5' 10", 185 lbs, Keane was a middleweight when he broke into the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens in 1988. I'm not sure what the little badass saw ahead for himself, but he wasn't just happy to be there. Keane went on to have a 16 year NHL career, winning Stanley Cups with 3 different teams and carving out a niche for himself as the consumate team guy along the way. He was also probably the first captain of the Montreal Canadiens to completely shun the French language. On thing was for sure, the fiesty Keane would fight anybody, anytime, size and strength be damned.
Mike was just the sort of guy who loved hockey, and loved competition. After playing his final NHL season in 2003-04 with the Vancouver Canucks, Keane went home to Manitoba and signed on with the local AHL team, the Manitoba Moose. He spent the next 6 seasons as the Moose captain, until finally, this past July, the Moose did not renew his contract.
Which doesn't necessarily mean he's out of hockey. You see, Mike Keane didn't retire, and he probably never will. I'm sure if you headed out to some frozen pond in Manitoba this weekend, you'd find Mike out there, skates and stick ready to play a little shinny. And my advice to you is to let him play, and for the love of god, don't fight him.
Mike Keane had a lot of fights over the years, and while this may not be the best one, it's a personal favorite. Bill Guerin is 4 inches taller and 35 lbs heavier Keane, but here the two stand toe-to-toe, blasting away at each other for 30 straight seconds. If that doesn't sound like a long time, well, go find somebody and ask them to punch you in the face for half a minute without a break. I think you'll both agree it's pretty exhausting.

Woot, Keane v Guerin makes me happy! Damn, that was a fight. Want to see more of those, not namby-pamby wrestling matches.
