KANED: Blackhawks 3, Senators 2 (Shootout)
I suppose a case can be made that the Chicago Blackhawks shouldn't have had such a tough time with the Ottawa Senators. I suppose I could sit here and bemoan another blown late lead.Instead, I'm just happy the Hawks came away with two points. More importantly, it's starting to look like Patrick Kane is becoming Patrick Kane again.
Kane scored his first goal since just after Thanksgiving, and then sealed the deal with one in the shootout, leading the Hawks to a 3-2 win that sent 21,657 out of the United Center into the snow happy.
Let's get to it:
THE GOOD:
As I said, the play of Kane. He's starting to show some jump in his legs, and his shot is coming around. Both he and Marian Hossa still haven't looked like the guys we know and lovesince they've come back from injury, but if this is any indication we may see the Hawks start looking like a team that has some malicious intent.
Patrick Sharp. Another handsome goal, his 24th. Hope he wasn't planning on going someplace warm for the All-Star break, because he's going to spend it in Raleigh.
The Hawks only took one penalty on the night. This is huge because...
THE BAD:
...the penalty kill still sucks. The last 4 times the Hawks have been shorthanded, the puck has bent the twine behind Corey Crawford. Win or not, this continues to be a problem, and one they can ill afford to not remedy quickly.
THE UGLY:
Really? They sent Alexei Kovalev in the shootout? Why not just raise a white flag? I mean, the word "shoot" is in "shootout", and Kovalev has never shown any great affinity for shooting the damn puck.
Instead of our standard Friday Night Fight, any Hawks/Senators game would not be complete without this bit of greatness from Pat Foley and Dale Tallon.
Enjoy:

Suh, I support that picture.

Fork, perhaps it's the mental exhaustion of a season that seems to go on and on and on.
But watching this game between two these teams was as interesting as watching instant coffee crystals dissolve.
Call Patrick Kane any thing you want. But anyone can do what he does, as former Isles great and current Senators color man Denis Potvin said, "change the game with one shot" is magic.
The Hawks need some magic right now.
I challenged our fellow S-Boxers to tell me which ones of the current roster filler could be replaced by any of the young talent in the pipeline.
The answer appeared to come back as "none".
If that is indeed the case, The Mighty Vanilla Hawks aren't going very far this year.
THE BAD, which I am shocked you missed, was Chris Neil and Brian Lee pounding Jonathan Toews while the VanillaHawks just let it happen.
Neil's karma, being what it is, made him the victim of his own player's high stick later.
The Hawks should have crushed the Senators, but instead we saw the same half baked effort from too many players, that has become the norm.
Thank the post that made the last save.
