WIN/WIN: Skille Traded, Hawks beat Oilers

The Chicago Blackhawks traded Jack Skille, along with minor leaguers Hugh Jessiman and David Pacan to the Florida Panthers for center Michael Frolik and goalie Alexander Salak. Judging by the officiating in tonight's game against the Edmonton Oilers, they might have gotten referee Kelly Sutherland in the deal as well.

Sutherland gave the Hawks 6 straight power plays, then gave 2 other Oilers 10 minute misconducts essentially negating their scoring abilties tonight, leading to a 4-1 Blackhawks win  in Rexall Place.

Let's get to this:

THE GOOD:

The trade. Skille and Jessiman represent the two biggest busts this side of Christina Hendricks. Frolik gives the Hawks another legitimate center, and I've heard nothing but good things about Salak. Hopefully he finds his way back to North America for next season, either to start in Rockford or to back up Corey Crawford. The Hawks are down to under $300K in cap space. Hopefully now places like Twitter and message boards will simmer down about asinine trade "rumors" (hint: Making shit up doesn't make it a rumor) involving guys with no movement clauses or guys the Hawks are looking to re-sign.

Jonathan Toews. Another two assists. He and Tomas Kopecky did some especially sweet setup work on Patrick Kane's first goal. He's doing all he can to will this team into the playoffs.

Corey Crawford. He snapped out of his 3-game losing streak with a solid effort tonight, including a save on Jordan Eberle where Eberle started raising his stick, thinking it was in, at the end of the second period.

Dave Bolland. He was attached to Taylor Hall's side all night, and Hall was largely invisible. No points for Bolland tonight, but he was huge defensively.

THE BAD:

Sutherland. He had a hair trigger all night, and started giving make-up calls in the third. The only reason he wasn't even more of a factor in this game was...

The Blackhawks' power play. 1-for-6. That's embarrassing. They've stunk like old onions for a few games now. That needs to change.

THE UGLY:

The Oilers are a motley-looking bunch of dudes, whether it's the equine Hall or the zaftig Dustin Penner. I was regretting watching this one in HD.

Next up for the Hawks is a Friday night tilt in Dallas against their old pal Adam Burish. Somebody's getting pregnant.
