TABERNAC!: Canadiens 2, Blackhawks 1 (OT)
Remember how the game against Detroit was Game of the Year?Well...
While it sucked to see the Chicago Blackhawks lose this one in overtime, this game not only had the look and feel of a playoff game, but it looked and felt like a Game 7.
PK Subban blasted a one-timer past Corey Crawford following Jonathan Toews being sent off following a very slow whistle in Bell Centre, giving the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 overtime win and also clinching a playoff spot.
Let's get to this:
THE GOOD:
The goaltending on both ends. Corey Crawford stopped 33 shots, many of which gave us vintage falsetto Pat Foley. On Twitter today, someone actually floated the idea of the Hawks claiming Michael Leighton, who was placed on re-entry waivers. First of all, no thanks, we've all seen that movie already. Secondly, Crawford is doing everything he can to just drag the Blackhawks into the playoffs. Where last year Antti Niemi was the beneficiary of the Hawks' incredible depth of forwards, a far superior team defense, and a Norris Trophy winning defenseman, Crawford has had to really work knowing he has a virtually nonexistent margin of error. He's been an absolute beast.
On the other end, Carey Price was astounding. The Hawks threw 43 shots at him, and 42 of them didn't get through. Last year the Habs' fans had Jaroslav Halak as their darling, and Price looked like a goalie in dire need of a change of scenery. Tonight they chanted Price's name, and it was deserved.
The pace of the game. This game was heartstopping, and there was plenty of skating and shooting. The crowd was electric all night, and this illustrated what a damn shame it is that each Original Six team doesn't get at least one visit to each other's building. This was every bit as exciting as it was back when Bobby Hull was firing pucks at Ken Dryden.
The best sweater-on-sweater matchup in hockey. The red Canadiens sweaters versus the Blackhawks whites. These uniforms don't belong in Bell Centre, they belong in the goddamn Forum.
In short, there was nothing bad about this game, except...
THE BAD:
The officiating. They blew calls both ways. The Toews call was a slow whistle, but ultimately the right call. They missed goaltender interference on Crawford, then whistled Tomas Kopecky after James Wisniewski clearly pushed Kopecky into Price a couple shifts later. Duncan Keith and Chris Campoli each got away with pretty blatant hooks. Just horrendous.
THE UGLY:
Troy Brouwer threw himself into a body check on Lars Eller, only Eller avoided the collision and Brouwer flew a couple feet before landing on his right shoulder on the ice. He was in severe pain, wincing and lying on the ice for a few minutes. Hopefully it's not serious, and he'll be back on skates soon. There is no amount of protective gear Brouwer could have won, since it was as if he had launched himself onto a sidewalk.
Now the Hawks come home to face the St. Louis Blues tomorrow, as both teams are on the second half of back-to-back games. Look for Davis Payne to trot out the meatheads to goon it up, as he did in a similar situation last season. Expect to see the Murdersaurus suit up for the Hawks.

totally disagree. It wasn't the "right call". Subban lost an edge and just dropped. Regardless, the call was made across the ice on an obscenely late delayed call.

Yet another game where Crawford should punch all his mates in the throat...

Saw a healthy amount of Blackhawks fans at the game.
Very glad to see the Habs fans show much respect for an Original Six team and its players. As you know, we have quite the rep, and the worst of it was the "CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWFORD" during the scoreless part of the game. Not so bad, relatively speaking.
You guys think Carey was outstanding, we thought Crawford was incredible. The goalie duel was just amazing to watch. The whole game overall was just so entertaining. Game 7, as you said.
Much as Fork bears our guys a grudge, for the most part, Montrealers like the Hawks. We're always glad to see them stop by, we cheer the hell out of Jonny T, and we want to know when you degenerates are coming to watch your team play at the Bell Centre.
Poutine's on me.
