Barbados Slim Pots Game Winner: Blackhawks 5, Coyotes 2

This game had all the makings of sending us all to bed angry. The Blackhawks dominated the first two periods and yet only held a slim one-goal lead heading into the third and would come out on the penalty kill. Instead of letting the Coyotes hang around, the Blackhawks put them to bed quickly thanks to a Dave Bolland shorthanded troll, I mean goal, and coasted to a 5-2 victory. Let's get to the things.

THE GOOD:

Well, the Blackhawks played an excellent game and lo there was a lot of good. The third line featuring Bryan Bickell, Dave Bolland and Michael Frolik was excellent. Even Joel Quenneville's penchant for line juggling won't get in the way of this group. Hossa made his return after sitting out last weekend and got the Blackhawks on the board first when the Coyotes put themselves down two men. The reason they went down two men? Ex-Hawk captain and notorious Wirtz Robber Adrian Aucoin shoved Dave Bolland into the net. Thanks, asshole. You haven't even begun to repay your debt.

The penalty kill probably looked as good, if not better, than the power play offensively. The Blackhawks put the frosting on this cupcake when Dave Bolland stole the puck on the kill and wound up from between the circles and blasted a slap shot past the comically bad Jason LaBarbera to make it 4-2. Bryan Bickell added the fifth goal on a sweet feed from Michael "Taters" Frolik. It was, you guessed it, a wrister.

But the big shoutout goes to our man, Barbados Slim - Jamal Mayers deflected a Duncan Keith slapshot from the point past LaBarbera in what turned out to be the game winning goal. A very nice way for Barbados Slim to open his Hawks account. He's been a great addition so far and you know what they say - you can't argue with those pecs.

THE BAD:

The power play moved the puck around fairly well and had some chances but overall wasn't great going 1 for 5. That seems like a minor complaint so I'll just get to two plays that stuck out as bad plays, if not lucky/unlucky.

First, Duncan Keith fell down in his own zone and turned the puck over to Ray Whitney who wristed the Coyotes' second goal past Crawford. If that was the only instance where a player fell on his own that would be one thing - but the ice was clearly awful all night long as players were constantly eating shit left and right. This just seemed like a bad break more than a 'Duncan Keith sucks' moment. Besides, Keith ended up with two helpers and a plus three on the night. Nice bit of redemption by #2.

Second, Corey Crawford came out of the net a little too far and it looked like he got trapped on the side as the puck found Daymond Langkow on the doorstep only to see the hand of fate turn his stick into a giant piece of cooked pasta right as he would have had an easy tap in. He biffed it. The rest was history.

THE UGLY:

I don't want to be the guy that picks on a team when they're down but once again the Coyotes attendance issues are obvious and it's hard to see. They announced 11,000 in the building but it looked like a lot less. The Blackhawks are traditionally a big draw in Phoenix with all of the transplants but usually they play these games during Spring Training when there are a ton of Chicagoans in town. This was a woeful crowd.

Also, Jason LaBarbera looked horrible most of the night. His rebound control is, let's say lacking. The Coyotes have serious goaltender issues and I'm not sure even the great Dave Tippett and all of his brilliant defensive scheming is going to save this team.

Next up for the Blackhawks are the red-hot (no, seriously) Colorado Avalanche in Denver for the first game of a home and home. The Avs gave the Blackhawks a lot of problems last year despite not being very good. See you then.

This is a game they lose--don't even get a point--at the same time last year. Good early-season sign.

I can't stand how the NHL props up Phoenix. It's like Bettman won't bring himself to believe that his NHL experiment in the south went too far.

Tampa, Dallas, Carolina, and Nashville will survive. However, Phoenix and Florida are in a weird spot.

The Yotes need to move to Quebec, Kansas City, or Seattle...please.
