Rolling: Hawks 5, Hurricanes 2

Now that was fun.  If you’ve been reminiscing about all those games last year where the Hawks made their opponents look like they were skating in quicksand, well, you got a treat tonight.  The Blackhawks were flying tonight, and were all over the Carolina Hurricanes.  There wasn’t much to it.  Chicago was just faster and better.  They generated a shitload of chances in the first two periods, but only took a 1 goal lead into the 3rd.  Then, instead of playing tight in the final period, the Blackhawks kept attacking, and broke through with 3 goals against Carolina backup Justin Peters.

Ryan Johnson – Johnson’s been killing at the faceoff dot, and tonight was no different, he won 74% of his draws, and finally got his first goal a Blackhawk.  Good game from a guy who has been quietly solid since Chicago picked him up.

Toews/Kane/Sharp – This is the best line in the NHL right now.  Toews and Kane each had goals, while Sharp had to settle for two assists.

Faceoffs/Active Sticks – The Hawks were able to control the game, because they were able to get control of the puck at will.  They won 71% of the faceoffs and it seemed like no Carolina pass got through cleanly .

The only real bad here came on the Hurricanes first goal.  The Canes broke into the zone on a two on two, and for some reason, none of the Hawks forwards came back to pick up Eric Staal who wandered into the zone, picked up a long rebound and buried.  Considering that it was the Bickell/Hossa/Bolland shutdown line on the ice, I expect better.

DID YOU KNOW?  With Fro Dog out of the country, the Hawks and Bulls both won convincingly.  Coincidence?  Probably.  But just in case I’ve contacted the Mounties and asked them to detain Fro until at least July.  You can thank me later.

Up Next:  Hawks take on Norris Division rival occasional opponent, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
